Reddit Afterlife: Popular vs Original

A man dies and goes to the Reddit afterlife.
He walks into a huge hall with two doors.

One says “Original Content,” the other says “Popular Feed.”

He opens the “Original Content” door. Inside, it’s nearly empty. A few tired artists quietly share their work. Someone explains a big scientific discovery to a folding chair. A man in the corner whispers, “I worked on this for three years.” He asks an admin why it’s so quiet.

The admin says, “It’s nice here, but everyone’s too busy creating to give likes. The most you’ll get is 5 karma and maybe a comment saying ‘underrated’ if you’re lucky.”

Bored, the man opens the “Popular Feed” door. It’s a loud stadium. Thousands of people shout the same three jokes from 2014. Gold and awards fly through the air. A giant screen shows a reposted cat video so blurry it looks like modern art. He notices half the crowd are shiny metal robots high-fiving each other.

Confused, he finds the Head Admin. “Why is everyone in here?” he asks. “And why are there so many robots?”

The Admin shrugs. “The other room is for people who want to be heard. This one is for people who want to be popular. The robots upvote, the humans complain, and every ten minutes we erase everyone’s memory so they can enjoy the same post again.”

The man frowns. “Wait… didn’t you already tell me this?”

The Admin smiles. “Welcome to Reddit.”
